The 65th edition of the race serves as an important prep for the Queen\u2019s Plate, slated for September 12 at Woodbine.<\/p>\n<p>Dotted Line, trained by Sid Attard for Howard Walton\u2019s Norseman Racing Stable, finished fifth and fourth, respectively, in his first two starts before rhyming off three straight wins in his rookie campaign.<\/p>\n<p>The now three-year-old gelded son of Signature Red closed the book on his first season at the races with back-to-back stakes wins, taking the Frost King by a neck, at 49-1, in November, and the Kingarvie, as the 3-5 choice, in December.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe\u2019s a very nice horse,\u201d said Attard, of the horse listed as the 18-1 ninth choice in the <a href=\"https:\/\/uat.woodbine.com\/woodbine-news\/malibu-mambo-tops-2020-queens-plate-winterbook\/\">2020 Queen\u2019s Plate Winterbook<\/a>. \u201cHe\u2019s a big, strong horse, and we liked him right from the start.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Justin Stein once again gets the call.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe has the right attitude, the drive to win and compete,\u201d said Stein, who was aboard for the Frost King and Kingarvie wins. \u201cWhen I ride him, he feels like he knows he is the best and he&#8217;s ready to prove it.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_3361\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3361\" style=\"width: 1500px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-3361\" src=\"https:\/\/uat.woodbine.com\/kingsplate\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2020\/08\/DottedLine-KingarvieStake-MichaelBurnsPhoto.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1500\" height=\"1000\" srcset=\"https:\/\/uat.woodbine.com\/kingsplate\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2020\/08\/DottedLine-KingarvieStake-MichaelBurnsPhoto.jpg 1500w, https:\/\/uat.woodbine.com\/kingsplate\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2020\/08\/DottedLine-KingarvieStake-MichaelBurnsPhoto-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/uat.woodbine.com\/kingsplate\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2020\/08\/DottedLine-KingarvieStake-MichaelBurnsPhoto-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/uat.woodbine.com\/kingsplate\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2020\/08\/DottedLine-KingarvieStake-MichaelBurnsPhoto-768x512.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1500px) 100vw, 1500px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-3361\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em>Dotted Line and jockey Justin Stein winning the 2019 Kingarvie Stakes at Woodbine Racetrack. (Michael Burns Photo)<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Other notable Queenston starters include Halo Again, owned by Winchell Thoroughbreds LLC and Willis Horton Racing LLC.<\/p>\n<p>The son of Speightstown, trained by Steve Asmussen, and bred by David Anderson, won his first two starts, including the 2019 running of the Coronation Futurity.<\/p>\n<p>Listed as the fourth choice (8-1) in the Queen\u2019s Plate Winterbook, Halo Again finished eighth in the Grade 3 Lecomte in January, and fourth in the Grade 3 Jeff Ruby Steaks, in March.<\/p>\n<p>The Eclipse, run at 1 1\/16 miles on the Toronto oval Tapeta, has attracted seven hopefuls for the 65th running of the stakes for four-year-olds and up.<\/p>\n<p>Three-time stakes winner Cooler Mike, a five-year-old son of Giant Gizmo, goes after his first graded stakes title.<\/p>\n<p>Bred and owned by father and son duo Mike and Nick Nosowenko, the gelding is one of the most consistent competitors on the Woodbine grounds, having assembled a 6-4-5 record from 21 career starts.<\/p>\n<p>Three of those wins \u2013 all stakes \u2013 came last year, a campaign that saw the Ontario-bred win the Halton, Bunty Lawless, and Sir Barton Stakes.<\/p>\n<p>Cooler Mike narrowly missed making it four added-money triumphs, finishing a neck behind Kingsport in the Steady Growth Stakes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen you win three stakes with an Ontario horse, I think it\u2019s a pretty good highlight,\u201d said Nick Nosowenko, who also trains. \u201cThen he lost that close one in the Steady Growth, which was another big effort. He\u2019s come around to be a very good horse. He\u2019s very sound now, and that\u2019s the best thing going into a race like this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He arrives at the Eclipse off a fifth-place finish in his 2020 debut, a 7-1\/2-furlong Inner Turf race at the Toronto oval on June 11.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe\u2019s doing great,\u201d said Nick Nosowenko. \u201cThat last race, there was nowhere else to go. I was kind of leery about going on the Inner Turf with the tight turns, but he ran pretty well. He looked like he was going to do something turning for home, but they just sprinted off on him. He galloped out strong and in front. He wasn\u2019t his happy self for the last little while, but after his work [five furlongs in :59-flat, breezing, on the Woodbine main track, on June 27], he started to have that bounce in his step again. (Michael Burns Photo)<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The chestnut, who won his career bow on August 7, 2017, went on to contest two of the three Canadian Triple Crown Series races in his sophomore season. He was third in both the Queen\u2019s Plate (June 30, 2018), at Woodbine, and the Prince of Wales (July 24, 2018), at Fort Erie.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think he\u2019s got a cool name, and he\u2019s built up a good following. I think people enjoy seeing him run like he does. He\u2019s won on different courses, and he\u2019s won at a mile-and-a-half, and come back to win at a mile-and-a-sixteenth. That\u2019s quite an adjustment for any horse, and he\u2019s done that. He\u2019s thriving right now. He\u2019s just a cool horse. He\u2019s the laid-back guy in the barn. Put him on the track and then he\u2019s a beast.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Two-time (Edenwold, 2006; Inglorious, 2011) Queen\u2019s Plate-winning trainer Josie Carroll sends out Avie\u2019s Flatter and Mr Ritz in the Eclipse.<\/p>\n<p>A four-year-old son of Flatter, Avie\u2019s Flatter has compiled a 4-2-2 mark from 11 starts for owner-breeder Ivan Dalos.<\/p>\n<p>The Ontario-bred chestnut launched his 2019 campaign with a smart score in the Grade 3 Transylvania Stakes last April at Keeneland.<\/p>\n<p>He contested all of last year\u2019s Canadian Triple Crown races, finishing second in both the Queen\u2019s Plate and Prince of Wales, and third in the Breeders\u2019 Stakes.<\/p>\n<p>In his most recent effort, Avie\u2019s Flatter was third, a half-length out of top spot, in a 7-1\/2-furlong Inner Turf race at Woodbine on June 11.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe had a good winter, but was set to run in the spring,\u201d said Carroll, who was inducted into the Canadian Horse Racing Hall of Fame in 2019. \u201cWe didn\u2019t get that opportunity and it was a little difficult to keep him focused and waiting. We got a nice race into him now, and I think that\u2019s going to propel him forward. He always shows up. We\u2019re taking a step forward, running with older horses this year \u2013 it\u2019s a different game.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Earle Mack\u2019s five-year-old Mr Ritz went 2-2-0 from five engagements last year, a season highlighted by a 1 \u00bc-length victory in the Grade 3 Seagram Cup Stakes, in August, followed by another 1 \u00bc-mile triumph one month later, in the Presque Isle Mile.<\/p>\n<p>The British-bred son of Oasis Dream just missed winning last year\u2019s edition of the Eclipse, finishing a nose back of Souper Tapit.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think he had a tremendous season last year,\u201d praised Carroll. \u201cWe gave him the whole winter off, and freshened him up. We really had targeted a mid-summer start anyway, so everything\u2019s fallen into place properly for him. He was just impressive all of last year. Every time you send him out to do something, he just goes out and gets the job done. He matured a lot last year. It took him a while to settle into things, and he\u2019s just really grown up. He\u2019s turned into a pretty special horse.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Carroll is confident in both her charges.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think they\u2019re both live horses. They\u2019re two consistent, live horses, that show up every time you lead them over.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Last year, Mark Casse trainee Federal Law paid $9.70 to win the Queenston as the 7-2 third choice on the toteboard.<\/p>\n<p>Live Oak Plantation\u2019s homebred Souper Tapit, also campaigned by Casse, took last year\u2019s Eclipse, returning $5.90 for the victory.<\/p>\n<p>On Saturday, Casse sends out Deviant in the Queenston as well as Eclipse contenders Uncle Bull and Skywire.<\/p>\n<p>The Queenston is carded as race seven on Saturday\u2019s 10-race program. The Eclipse goes as a race eight.
